Recording new record is moving right along

So here I am, about four songs into my new record and I must say I feel exhilarated hearing these new songs take shape. It’s a bit nerve racking starting from scratch, taking on the prospect of a new record. I’ve written about 15 new songs the last few months, but until I dive in the studio and hear the music back through the speakers, I’m never quite certain if the songs I’ve written are any good. Just my own creative demons I have to deal with.

Dan Silver, from the LA based band Standing Shadows, is producing the record and I must say, the process has been pretty effortless and most importantly, a lot of fun.

Dan has such an ease about him in the studio and what impresses me most, is how he can play so many instruments so incredibly well. From bass to guitar, synth, percussion, engineering, his talents are all over this record.

I met Dan last year at SXSW through a mutual friend, and after bumping into him shortly thereafter on three separate occasions, it just seemed only natural that we start working together. While he’s already remixed a couple tracks for me off my last Remixed EP, I was still a bit apprehensive moving forward wondering how I want this record to sound. I must say it’s a totally different beast when you start recording a new record with brand new songs from the very beginning. The tapestry is empty and the production of the songs can go in so many directions.

I must say though, I was put at ease pretty much right away. After seeing Dan perform in Los Angeles, hearing the Standing Shadows records, and knowing our taste in music has some striking similarities, I felt like it was a perfect fit. We both love music that feels dramatic and lush but at the same time we both love a good pop song so I think we’re trying to find that middle ground. Cool tones and textures but also melodic and catchy.

I feel so alive being back in the studio again creating and writing and producing. I love those late nights, hearing the songs in your head well after you’ve left the studio. Diving head first into new ideas and new songs. It’s truly where I feel the most comfortable. Stay tuned as the creative process continues. Here are some shots taken from the studio… Dig it!
