Not really ever been the type to get too crazy over New Year’s, just not my style. A good movie and a good dinner with friends always feels so nourishing to the soul so that’s how I spent the evening. I don’t know if you know too much about Los Angeles, but L.A. is probably at it’s best during the holidays so I love to just stay in town.
The weather is normally in the 70′s or 80′s and since most people go out of town, the city ends up so quiet and peaceful with no traffic which is truly a miracle out here. It’s a divine place to be during the holidays and it actually inspires the hell out of me.
I find myself reflecting quite a bit during the holidays and use the peace out here to try and sort out what I want to do next on a creative level…I’ve been writing a lot of new songs lately, not sure if any of them will end up on a new record this year but it’s great to be feeling so creative again. I also acquired some new instruments during the holidays so I feel pretty lucky to have new pieces of gear to hopefully help inspire me.
As far as New Year’s resolutions go, I like to keep most of them to myself, but one goal I have is to release at least two or maybe even three EP’s this coming year. I’m so stoked to be working with Dan Silver right now. He’s such a talented producer/musician and it’s a blessing to be working with him on a new record. We’re about three songs into the album and it’s actually been an effortless process for the both of us. Each time we meet, the music just evolves so organically and naturally which leads me to think the record will sound that way as well. It’s a bit more rock than my previous records but it’s nice to hear the potential of my songs just rocking out.
I’m also thinking about releasing an EP this coming year produced in a much more acoustic, stripped down vibe, kind of like Ray LaMontagne or Elliot Smith. We’ll see if this idea comes to fruition. When making an acoustic record, the songs and lyrics and melodies have to be so solid since there isn’t too much production to hide behind, but it sounds like a really rad idea.
It’s normally not my style to share “demos” I’ve recorded. I usually like to wait until my songs are totally finished with finished vocals, lyrics, etc…but what the hell, maybe with the New Year comes a new approach to how I share music. Here are a few demos of some new songs I wrote this past week. They’re very rough, very raw, totally unfinished, but they have a vibe I dig so that’s a nice inspiring start. Hope you can take a listen when you have a moment…
First one is called “Wasted time”
This track is called “Give Up On Love” And the last one is called “This ain’t the life”
I’m also hoping this year I can learn to let go a little bit and just blog more. It can be a photo, a thought, a new demo, just anything to send you some assurance that I am in fact back in the studio writing and recording again. I’m excited by the possibilities this year holds on a creative level. And really more than anything, I can’t wait to release some new music. I hope this coming year is filled with lots of great health and inspiration for you all! Thanks for reading this first blog of mine from the New Year. Cheers!
